Lou Manfredo’s RIZZO’S FIRE

The follow-up to RIZZO’S WAR does not disappoint. Mike McQueen has been promoted to the city and Joe Rizzo is partnered with Priscilla Jackson who we briefly met in the first novel. Rizzo introduces Priscilla to his Brooklyn beat and educates her on differences between being a cop in Brooklyn and being a cop in Manhattan. He is also still trying to come to terms with the decision he and Mike made about Councilman Daily but the daily grind of police work in Brooklyn keeps him busy.
RIZZO’S FIRE is another superb policed procedural and while it doesn’t carry the same wallop that the first book did I still thoroughly enjoyed it. They way cases are actually built and investigated (as opposed to what we see on TV) is brilliantly done and although the driving case of this book is a murder mystery it is not handled in the typical way. Rizzo must juggle the politics of the NYPD and solve the case in a way that helps him with his other problems and I loved the fact that there was a literary twist to the crime.
I can’t wait to see where Lou Manfredo takes the series from here because he has left it delicately poised with a fork in the road to choose from.
