Why it’s worth saving the local book industry
I wrote an article for for the St James Ethic Centre’s Living Ethics publication on why I think people should support Australian booksellers rather than overseas ones.

Print media used to be the friend of the bookseller.
The general reader is quite discerning but if they like the story they can forgive the writing, some reviewers seem unable or unwilling to do this.

No Borders but we’re still Restricted
the current PIRs are out-of-date, out-of-touch and are causing great damage to the Australian Book Industry rather than protecting it.
DRM is a necessary evil
DRM is not perfect but it is what it is and I can imagine some other ways to protect a digital work that would be much worse than DRM.
What Price A Book in Australia?
While prices in this country are influenced by people thousands of miles away who view our market as nothing more than a small outpost, have no real investment in our market or knowledge of what is happening here; then our market is truly doomed
The Book Industry is not dying, it’s about to take off, everybody just has to get on board.
To say our industry is on its knees is overly pessimistic. In fact the book industry is on the cusp of a new and exciting era.

FORMAT WARS: eBooks won’t kill physical books but it may knock off a few formats
eBooks have created disposable books. Readers download what they want, read it and move on without physically owning or possessing anything other than their eReading device. This creates a whole new paradigm for publishing.
