Duane Swierczynski’s FUN & GAMES

I love a Duane Swierczynski novel. Absolutely love ‘em. They a pure reading entertainment. There’s only one problem: I read them too fast! I started FUN & GAMES on Friday morning at breakfast, read some more on my lunch break that day and then murdered the rest of the book on Saturday (instead of doing the things I was supposed to be doing!). But I don’t really care because his books ( FUN & GAMES especially) are awesome. They are furiously paced (literally break neck speed) and they are completely insane (which makes them totally unpredictable). He has been a bit of secret outside the US but now that he is with Little Brown’s new crime imprint, Mullholland Books, he is going to be published in the UK and Australia for the first (this hasn’t stopped me importing his books at Pages & Pages though).

FUN & GAMES is the first book in a planned trilogy featuring Charlie Hardie with the second book due for release later this year. Like Duane’s other books it is based on a really crazy premise. You know those nutty conspiracy theories about celebrities who are killed but their deaths are made to look like accidents? Well, they’re true. They are carried out by a secret organization called ’the accident people’ and Charlie Hardie, ex-Cop (kinda), has just stumbled into the middle of one of their jobs. The one-liners fly thick and fast (in fact each chapter begins with one from a classic action movie) and only uncontrolled laughter can slow your reading down. Swiercynski has an innate ability to not only make you suspend belief but he almost convinces you of the craziness that is ensuing.

I cannot wait for the next installment and judging by the end of this book it is going to be even more crazy than the first one.
